formation flying

What is Formation Flight?

Fish gather to form large groups, making themselves look like a larger organism as a whole to avoid predator attacks. Similarly, it is possible for a group of small artificial satellites to achieve the functions that can be achieved by large satellites through cooperation. The technology of formation flight, in which multiple satellites achieve missions through cooperation, is being studied.
In this laboratory, we conduct research on proximity maneuvers of spacecraft, represented by formation flight and rendezvous.

Analysis of Proximity Maneuvers for ADR Missions

We are researching relative orbit design assuming active debris removal (ADR) for space debris. In ADR missions, control of spacecraft proximity maneuver is necessary when approaching and capturing debris by service satellites.
